Hairdresser arrested for alleged sexual assaults at Toronto salon

A Toronto hairdresser is facing a total of nine charges, including five counts of sexual assault against the owner of a family pet. Murad Rizvi, a 33-year-old married father of two, works at Estival Hair Studio in Kensington Market.

Rizvi was originally charged with sexual assault last month, but on Thursday court rejected the Crown’s request to have him remanded to jail for two weeks while they tried to get more witnesses to testify.

When the judge said he should remain in custody for the two weeks, Detective Constable Val Miceli of the Toronto Police Service said Rizvi was not at home when his bail conditions were breached. He’s since been arrested.

Rizvi also faces 10 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a person under the age of 16 years, as well as living or socializing with a minor, after he spent two days with his two children, aged four and six, earlier this month while the parents were at a friend’s home.

In 2013, Rizvi did a holiday project by visiting different schools to speak to first-grade students about sexual abuse, introducing himself as “a nice kid who likes dinosaurs.”

Rizvi has been released on bail, and will next appear in court on Dec. 21.
