Toronto police arrest man in church sex assaults

TORONTO — Police say they’ve arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with sexual assaults alleged to have taken place at a church in Toronto’s North York neighbourhood since at least 2013.

Toronto police say the man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman on three separate occasions at the church between Feb. 4, 2013, and Feb. 27, 2014.

The suspect was arrested this week at his home, and is facing three counts of sexual assault, three counts of assault and one count of breach of recognizance.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 29.

Toronto police Sgt. Tim Burrows says investigators believe there may be more victims.

Burrows says the suspect may have participated in events, primarily social events, at the church, which at the time was called the Chapel of Our Lady and Saint, according to a 2013 Toronto Sun article.

It’s unclear whether the man worked for the church, according to Burrows.

“We’re looking at whether that has any links to anything,” he said.

Investigators say the church is currently under renovation, and are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim or who has information about the alleged assaults, to contact police.
